What Is Minecraft Ray Tracing
Minecraft is a massively popular sandbox game that never really focused on visuals and graphics. The huge popularity of the game is credited to the addictive and intriguing gameplay it offers. But, with the advancement in technology, Minecraft is now starting to focus on graphics with the help of Ray Tracing technology. Ray Tracing is a rendering technique for computer graphics. It helps in generating an image by tracing the path of light as pixels in an image plane. While also stimulating the effects of its encounters with virtual objects.
When you think about Minecraft, youll have some blocks and simple graphics appear in your mind. But, when you think about Minecraft with Ray Tracing, the picture will be very different. There will be more realistic lightings, shadows, and reflects. The graphics would really evolve with the ray-tracing support that Minecraft is introducing.
When Is The Release Date For Minecraft On Xbox Series X
The question to end all questions is when Minecraft will be upgraded for the Xbox Series X and Series S. We have an entire article dedicated to when Minecraft with ray tracing will come to Xbox Series X|S, but the answer there is the same as here: we simply don’t know.
Between an early technical demonstration of Minecraft with ray tracing running on Xbox Series X, Minecraft RTX working wonderfully on Windows 10, and the gaming technologies inside Xbox Series X|S progressively becoming more accessible, it’s easy to assume and believe that Minecraft is definitely being upgraded for Xbox Series X|S. Unfortunately, there has been absolutely zero confirmation from Mojang Studios that it’s actually happening, so we’re not able to take guesses at a potential release date.
Recent rumors have suggested that Minecraft will receive its next-gen upgrade with the upcoming Caves and Cliffs Update. However, the Caves and Cliffs Update was recently split into two parts and partially delayed, so even if Minecraft was being upgraded for Xbox Series X|S with this next feature update it’s still not clear. Should we expect it in Summer 2021 or Winter 2021? If the next-gen upgrade was planned, has it now been delayed beyond the Caves and Cliffs Update like the new archeology system? There’s simply no way to know for sure.
Here Are The Minimum System Requirements You Will Need
You cannot run Minecraft RTX Beta on a potato PC. You will need good specs to play it efficiently. Here are the minimum systems requirements that you will need to run it. If you try running the game with specs below these, you may experience crashing, lagging, and unnecessary freezing.
- CPU: Intel Core i5, or equivalent, or better
- RAM: 8GB, or more
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, or better
- Storage: 2GB
- Operating System: Windows 10
Once you have met these, continue with the steps mentioned below.

Previously, Mojang CEO Jonas Martensson stated that to use Minecraft for cross-platform play Xbox Live is required, even on the Nintendo Switch. In an interview with Pressfire.no translated on popular gaming forum NeoGAF, he stated that Nintendo has agreed to this and have been “pretty pragmatic and understanding.”
“We’re tying everything together with Xbox Live. So you log in with Xbox Live…,” he trailed off, further being pressed by the website if this would include the Nintendo Switch to which he said:
“Yes. That’s pretty unique as well! But everyone that’s in on this, all the platform holders, have been pretty pragmatic and understanding of that what we’re trying to do is create a good experience for the players. We needed a good system to connect everyone, and Xbox Live is a good system.”
Minecraft For Xbox Series X
Minecraft‘s place at the top of the games industry is indisputable after years of constant support and dedication from Mojang Studios. Now that Microsoft has helped spearhead next-gen console game with the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, many gamers are left wondering when, or even if, Minecraft will ever become an Xbox Series X|S Optimized title. The technology is there, Minecraft has given fans a peek at what a next-gen Minecraft experience could look like, and the expectation exists for Mojang Studios as a first-party studio for Xbox and Microsoft.
However, information is scarce, and Mojang Studios has yet to commit to a proper next-gen upgrade for Minecraft on Xbox Series X|S. We’ve compiled everything we know into one place. Here’s what you need to know about Minecraft and ray tracing on Xbox Series X|S.
Available everywhere you play.
Minecraft is an inarguable and complete success. It has sold copies in the hundreds of millions, has a huge following of dedicated players, and lets you unlock your every creative desire. It’s also available on every platform imaginable, including Xbox, Windows 10, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS. Play with anyone and play anywhere.

Minecraft On Xbox Series X
Earlier in April 2021, I published an article that discussed why Mojang Studios often feels like an underfunded indie studio, despite the success of Minecraft. The article resonated with many, but it also surfaced a topic holding the attention of vocal Minecraft players for several months now. In this follow-up article, we’re diving deeper into Minecraft and how it fits on Microsoft’s next-gen Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S consoles. More specifically, how Minecraft on Xbox Series X|S has proven incredibly disappointing, both as it exists now and its potential.
We already have extensive resources that reveal when Minecraft with ray tracing is coming to Xbox Series X|S , so don’t expect any brilliant revelations or new information reveals here. Instead, I want to take a closer look at why Minecraft on Xbox Series X|S is an unfortunate disappointment, and how it connects to the larger weaknesses at Mojang Studios .
Ray Tracing Is So Close
Mojang Studios has actually released a significant official enhancement for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition with support for real-time ray tracing. Minecraft with RTX ray tracing completely changes the game by totally overhauling Minecraft’s established visuals. The caveat? Minecraft with RTX is exclusive to Windows 10 PCs combined with NVIDIA’s high-end RTX GPUs, which are some of the best PC GPUs around. For gamers playing Minecraft in the right place with the right hardware, real-time ray tracing can be enabled to bring realistic lighting, shadows, reflections, textures, and more to Minecraft with absolutely gorgeous results.
When Minecraft with RTX was revealed, and subsequently updated and tweaked up to its public release, players assumed it was destined for the latest consoles. After all, Mojang Studios hinted that it wants to bring Minecraft with ray tracing to other platforms. Minecraft with RTX also utilizes the power of the same Render Dragon engine and DirectX APIs, with support real-time ray tracing with AMD’s RDNA 2 GPUs present on Xbox Series X|S.
There’s zero indication that a next-gen upgrade for Minecraft is coming at all
In fact, one of the earliest demonstrations of hardware-accelerated ray tracing on Xbox Series X|S actually used Minecraft, although Microsoft was quick to say this was a technical demonstration and not a product announcement.

Talent And Technical Challenge
One thing that I once again want to make very clear: I have a ton of respect for Mojang Studios and the work that they do. Mojang is filled with extremely talented individuals who work tirelessly and passionately to deliver on the ambitions and promises of the Minecraft franchise. Even when casting a criticizing eye on Mojang Studios or Minecraft, it’s not okay to levy that same frustration against individual team members, who likely love Minecraft just as much as you do.
Mojang is filled with extremely talented individuals who work tirelessly and passionately.
Beyond talent, there are also the technical challenges of making any of this a reality. Minecraft with RTX on Windows 10 isn’t even fully finished despite its public release and bringing that same technology to Xbox Series X|S means a ton of work and effort that everyday people will likely never see. There’s also the broad scope of Minecraft to take into consideration and all the other work that goes into making that game as great as it is.
Whether or not a next-gen upgrade for Minecraft is happening, we can rest assured knowing some of the most talented people in the video games industry would be working on it. As with many things, though, frustration and disappointment tend to grow over time .

Will I Keep All Of My Progression And Purchases With Cross
Since the version of Minecraft you’ll play on the Xbox Series X and Series S will be the exact same as the version you’ll play on other platforms and will be synced through your Microsoft account, Marketplace purchases should still carry over. Your maps should also carry over from Xbox One as long as you have cloud saves turned on, so you can download your maps and enjoy all the greatness that the Xbox Series X|S has to offer.
This is the benefit of taking advantage of features like Smart Delivery, because instead of having to figure out how to connect two entirely separate games , Mojang Studios can use all the existing features in Minecraft that protect your progression. That means it should be easier than ever to keep all of your information moving forward and ensure any money you spent purchasing new maps, worlds, or packs in Minecraft doesn’t go to waste on Xbox Series X|S.
Protecting cross-save also matters if you’re coming from Minecraft: Bedrock Edition on another platform to Xbox Series X|S, as your Marketplace purchases like maps, skins, and texture packs should sync through your Microsoft Account.

An Xbox One S For Minecraft Lovers

The main draw of the limited-edition Minecraft Xbox One S is its overarching design, which is heavily inspired by the voxel textures seen in-game. The upper half of the console is colored in various shades of green and brown, and when standing vertically it is designed to look like the grass block from Minecraft. The second half of the console, which is often black across standard units, is shaded in gray, in the style of game’s stone block. Where Do We Go From Here
When you observe the broader picture and take everything presented into consideration, the future for Minecraft on Xbox Series X|S becomes increasingly muddled. Between the absence of communication from Mojang Studios, the depressing state of Minecraft in backward-compatible mode, and a lack of any updates to resolve these issues on Xbox Series X|S, things aren’t looking great.
Minecraft with RTX is the only ray of hope for players, but it’s cast over with doubt and confusion
Minecraft with RTX on Windows 10 is the only ray of hope that players really have to bask in, but even that is cast over with a myriad of doubts and confusion. No matter how you look at the situation, it all comes back to Mojang Studios and how their tendency to make strange decisions and keep cards close to their chest leads to Mojang Studios feeling like it doesn’t have the people or resources necessary to deliver on promises .
Minecraft on Xbox Series X|S is an unfortunate disappointment. Even more frustrating is how easy it would be for Mojang Studios to alleviate the vast majority of concerns from the Minecraft community. Issues with Minecraft running in backward compatible mode notwithstanding, simple communication from Mojang Studios would go a long way towards restoring faith in the studio behind the largest game in the world and its support of Microsoft’s hardware.
