I never thought Id see a book like this, brought to us by the author of World War Z no less. A month ago, if you had floated me the idea of a Minecraft novel adaptation, I would have laughed and said it would never fly. I mean, what would it even be about? Wont it just end up being a three-hundred-page instruction manual on how to play the game?

Well, apparently yes and no. This first and only official Minecraft novel, trumpets the publisher blurb, tells the story of a hero stranded on an island based in the Minecraft world. The book starts off with our unnamed protagonist coming to consciousness in a freaky new reality where everythingthe land, the trees, the animals, the sun, and even the characters own bodyis made up of square blocks. This shouldnt be too hard to picture in your mind, if youre familiar with Minecraft, though if youre not, then this booknot to mention the rest of this reviewis probably going to sound very strange.

Max Brooks Talks About The Mountain The Sequel To His First Minecraft Book

In Max Brooks first Minecraft book, The Island, readers follow the inner thoughts of Guy, a man who wakes up and finds himself having to survive in a weird world of blocks.

Now, in the sequel, The Mountain, Guy strikes out across the sea to see what else the world holds, and he lands on a frozen taiga coast. There, he encounters another person, Summer. Now Guy is going to learn how to survive with someone else.

If you enjoy the audiobook versions of stories like this, youll hear familiar voices on both: Jack Black and Sean Astin, who both went to high school with Brooks.

About Minecraft: The Island

The first official Minecraft novel! In the tradition of iconic adventures like Robinson Crusoes Treasure Island, the New York Times bestselling author of World War Z tells the story of a hero stranded in the world of Minecraft who must unravel the secrets of a mysterious island in order to survive.

Washed up on a beach, the lone castaway looks around the shore. Where am I?Who am I? And why is everything made of blocks? But there isnt much time to soak up the sun. Its getting dark, and theres a strange new world to explore!

The top priority is finding food. The next is not becoming food. Because there are others out there on the island . . . like the horde of zombies that appear after night falls. Crafting a way out of this mess is a challenge like no other. Who could build a home while running from exploding creepers, armed skeletons, and an unstoppable tide of hot lava? Especially with no help except for a few makeshift tools and sage advice from an unlikely friend: a cow.

In this world, the rules dont always make sense, but courage and creativity go a long way. There are forests to explore, hidden underground tunnels to loot, and undead mobs to defeat. Only then will the secrets of the island be revealed.
