How Can My Kid Start Coding In Minecraft
While there are Minecraft coding tutorials online, we believe that coding is best learned in a supportive environment. Our coaches dont set out rigid lesson plans instead, we use the Minecraft game to introduce coding to students of any skill level.
Similar to Scratch, Minecraft uses drag-and-drop code editors that are easy to understand and which provide step-by-step instructions. Kids can also get creative and introduce their own code.
Our coding camps are taught in low-ratio groups, with just six students per instructor. This setting gives educators a chance to meet students where they are in their skill set, challenging them appropriately with age-appropriate lessons. If a camp isnt in the cards, we also offer private lessons for kids who need a more flexible program.
Beyond getting personalized lessons, students in our camp gain valuable social skills. Kids who learn in a collaborative environment work in a team to accomplish tasks. We find that students also learn from one another, making it a great environment to build teamwork and group problem-solving skills.
The collaborative nature of our programs is what makes theCoderSchool unique and fun. We dont think sitting in a classroom is the way to learn, which is why our hands-on programs are so powerful for our students. They get to play and learn using a video game they love, and make huge strides in their knowledge through the process.

How Is Minecraft Used In Schools
It is rare that a game made for solely entertainment purposes crosses over and is used so widely in education. However, Minecraft proved to be an exception. Ever since Microsoft bought Minecraft in 2014, it has been used in countless coding courses to teach kids real computer programming. Even with this change, an important question remains can a game actually be used to teach coding? Well, it turns out that with a few tweaks, it can!
Code.org and Microsoft paired up to bring Minecraft coding to students 7 years and older. Through various activities, students can enter this virtual world while learning different coding languages, including block-based coding. The courses come equipped with tutorials that help guide students on how to build their own worlds using the famous game. These courses utilize the theme of Minecraft to help students learn coding as they explore different worlds.
The amount of kids learning to code through fun games like Minecraft is continuing to grow. The best way to discover how Minecraft can teach students code is to try it for yourself in class!

Why Offer Coding Classes
At their essence, public libraries spark creativity, ignite the imagination, and encourage learning through play and experimentation. Coding and computer classes allow children and teens the opportunity to acquire new digital literacy skills and to grow in new ways. SCL has been offering coding classes since 2013, when we offered Minecraft Coding Camps supported by a Library Services Technology Act grant through the California State Library. Since then, coding clubs, classes, and workshops have been offered in different formats and with different focuses, with the goals of cultivating problem-solving skills, improving confidence and skills with computers, and providing children and teens with an informal learning process that is most effective for learning to code.
Library coding activities/programs focus on building skills for the future, and support the critical piece of the Library’s Strategic Plan, that we “rovide our residents with access to a variety of technologies in order to acquire new skills, explore new possibilities, and make informed consumer decisions with technology.”
