How To Stream Minecraft On Twitch

Set Up Your Spawn Point

Tip: How to Stream to Twitch From Minecraft

The first thing you should do on your server is set up your spawn point. Build a welcome station that your viewers can see as soon as they land in the world. Have this be your home base where people can gather if they want to work together. Post the rules somewhere in the base.

Protect your spawn point by disabling anyone to build or destroy blocks on those chunks. Use your Minecraft server software or a plugin to make sure that you are the only one who can control the area.

A popular feature of many servers is the kit command. Use a plug-in to create a start out kit for your viewers. It can be as simple as a set of stone tools to get them started or you can give them full diamond armor right off the bat. If your spawn point is on a small island, make sure to give them a boat in the kit. Since youve disabled the chunks around the area, they wont be able to build one for themselves.

There are other options you can set for your server, such as night becoming day, even if just one person sleeps. Talk to your viewers and see which settings they would prefer.

Enter Your Stream Key

Return to Twitchs website and go back to the creator dashboard. Click on Preferences and then select the Channel option from the drop-down menu. This will take you to a page with your Primary Stream Key, as well as other options. Find the stream key area, and then press the copy button next to it. If your stream key gets shared somewhere it shouldnt, you can always reset it here, too. Go ahead and enter your stream key into OBS by clicking Settings in the bottom right, followed by Stream, and youll see where to enter the key. Be sure to click Apply to make the changes.

How To Make A Minecraft Twitch Overlay

We’ll use screenshots from the game to create a custom stream overlay that you can use on Twitch or any other platform you prefer. You will need Minecraft, Adobe Photoshop, and streaming software of your choice. The result is a Minecraft overlay OBS ready design.

  • Social Media Icons – no longer available
  • Screenshots from Minecraft

You are welcome to download these assets and use them in your Minecraft Twitch overlay template, or use any content of your choice. You’ll also need to take some screenshots within the game. We’re going to use them to make our overlay graphics.

While this section focuses on OBS Studio, you can use NVIDIAs GeForce Experience desktop client on PCs with a GTX or RTX GPU, which provides an overlay that includes a broadcast component. On PCs with a Radeon GPU, you can use the Record & Stream component in AMDs Radeon Software. However, we chose to use OBS Studio because it offers a higher level of customization, broadcasts to more locations, and is a popular multiplatform client.

Optimize Settings For Streaming

From there, streamers may want to optimize their settings to ensure that their audience is receiving the best quality output for the level of input available.

  • Go to the Tools section on the Menu bar.
  • Click on the Auto-Configuration Wizard, then select the optimize for streaming option.

For the next part of optimizing the stream, beginners should look into the settings once more.

  • Under the Settings, select the Audio tab.
  • Head to the Devices section of the Audio tab.
  • Activate the Desktop Audio one for screensharing.

After this, both physical and digital performers will want to look into the mics/auxiliary audio options. Depending on what type of performance is live, there will be a couple of choices. OBS Studio only offers four of these auxiliary audio options, meaning it can only handle up to four inputs at the same time. For a larger band, this likely means that only one audio, straight from their soundboard would be selected to transfer through the stream. Whereas, for a small podcast or singing group, each person may get their own microphone connected to OBS and the stream.

Install The Software And Connect It To Twitch

Any one of the software choices we mentioned earlier will work great for Twitch. For the purposes of this guide, however, well use OBS Studio for all examples and explanations.

After installation, OBS Studio will ask whether or not to run the auto-configuration wizard. Consider opting for a manual setup. That will get you acquainted with some important aspects of streaming.

For starters, head to File > Settings > Stream in OBS Studio. Choose Twitch as your service, then either connect your Twitch account to OBS Studio or connect Twitch using the stream key.

For the former, youll just need the login information for your Twitch account. For the latter, you should go to Twitch, go to Settings > Channel and Videos, and copy the primary stream key you see there. Paste it into OBS, and youre done.

Power Up Your Live Streaming Setup

If youre looking to add some power to your streaming setup to make it better at handling whatever game you want to throw at it, adding a dedicated streaming PC is a great way to do it. If youre running a two-PC setup, youll want the one with more processing power to handle the streaming. And youll need a capture card.

Capture cards come in internal and external variants. The internal cards must be physically installed onto the streaming computers motherboard and then connected with the gaming PC via HDMI. The external cards connect via USB to the streaming computer on one end and via HDMI to the gaming computer on the other end. After that, you only have to add the capture card as a source in OBS.

If youre using a PC-console setup, the main difference is that the capture card sits in between the console and the TV or computer monitor. Use the in HDMI port to plug the console into the card and the out HDMI port to connect the card with the display or TV. Again, simply add the card in OBS Studio as a source, and youre set.

Add Video From Your Webcam

If youd like to include a small video of your webcam on top of the game stream, add it as another source to your scene. Right-click inside the Sources box and click Add > Video Capture Device. Name your video capture device and click OK.

OBS should automatically find your webcam, if you have one. Select the webcam device you want to use and configure any settings you want to change here. The default settings should work fine. Click OK when youre done.

Your webcam video will be superimposed over your game or desktop in the OBS preview window. Use your mouse to drag and drop the video where you want it, and click and drag the corners to resize your webcam frame to your desired size.

If you dont see your webcam video, make sure the Video Capture Device appears above your main game or display capture source in the Sources box. Sources that are on top of one another in the list are on top of one another in your live video. So, if you move the video capture device to the bottom of the sources list, it will be underneath your game stream and no one will see it. Drag and drop sources to rearrange them in the list.
