Save The Serverjar File To Your Device

After downloading the latest version of Java, youll need to download the server.jar file. And to attain this, use the following link.

While downloading, your computer may issue a warning that this file is potentially harmful. This is a standard alert for.jar files. You should be concerned with these if you dont know where it comes from. Let us put our faith in Minecraft on this one.

Save this file to the Minecraft Server folder if youre given a choice. If not, copy and paste or drag the completed download into the folder.

    Tweaking The Servers Properties

Open up the file in notepad. Youll see something like this:

    Youll see some important options.

    • level-name: This is the name of your Minecraft world. If you change this name, the server will look for a folder with a matching name, and if none is found, it will generate a new level with this name.
    • spawn-monsters: If set to false, monsters such as zombies, skeletons, and creepers will not spawn. Often turned off for op or creative servers, where everyone builds and survival is not the focus of gameplay.
    • spawn-animals: If set to false, animals such as wolves, cows, sheep, and chickens will not spawn.
    • pvp: If set to false, players will not be able to harm one another, although you can still inflict damage by pushing other players off of ledges.
    • white-list: If set to true, the server will only allows the usernames in the white-list.txt file to successfully connect and play.

For a complete description of all of the options, check out the Minecraft Wikis page on Once youre done changing things to what you want, save the file.

Since its your server, be sure to add your Minecraft username in the ops.txt file. That way, youll be an operator with full admin rights. You can generate any item you want, ban players, make other players ops, and change the in-game time.

When youre ready, start up the server again.

What You Will Need For A Raspberry Pi Minecraft Server

To install a Minecraft server on your Raspberry Pi, you will need:

    • A Raspberry Pi 3 or Raspberry Pi 4 and power cable.
    • Ethernet cable.
    • 16GB or larger microSD card.

Although earlier Pi models can be used for this, the results aren’t as good. Note that an Ethernet cable is recommended because it is faster than Wi-Fi. You can use wireless networking, but a faster connection means superior server provision and better in-game performance.

These instructions for the Raspberry Pi 3 and 4 will give you the best Minecraft server possible.

All the above, when used with a remote SSH connection, will let you set up a Minecraft server on your Raspberry Pi. If SSH isn’t an option, you will also need:

    • USB keyboard
    • A monitor or other compatible display

Connect these peripherals before powering on your Raspberry Pi.

You will also, of course, need a copy of Minecraft on your computer. Note that the system spec of the Raspberry Pi means that you won’t be able to host too many people. For the Pi 3, certainly don’t attempt to host more than 10. If you plan to install Minecraft server on Raspberry Pi 4, you can host more players depending on the choice of RAM.

    Create Minecraft Server: Step

Install The Minecraft Server On Raspberry Pi

Installing Minecraft on the Raspberry Pi relies on the Nukkit server software from Cloudburst. Developed specifically for Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Nukkit can be easily installed on the Pi via the command line.

Start by installing Java. This is required for Nukkit to run:

    sudo apt install oracle-java8-jdk

Next create a new directory then open it:

    mkdir nukkitcd nukkit

With that done, download the Nukkit server software. Be sure to enter this accurately—it’s easier to copy and paste into an SSH session.

    wget -O nukkit.jar

    Once downloaded, run Nukkit:

    sudo java -jar nukkit.jar

This prompts Nukkit to set up the server. When prompted, choose your language then watch as the Minecraft server is generated.

    Startup And Maintenance Script

Alternatively, you can manage/automate the startup and shutdown of the Minecraft server using a script such as the ones listed below:

Port forwarding is used when you have a router and you wish to let users connect to your server through it. If you wish to host your server for local reasons, it is not required that you do so. Keep in mind that port forwarding might cause security risks.

When port forwarding, it varies on how your router will ask you for the information. If you don’t understand on how your router wants you to input the information, try visiting for a tutorial.

Once you have managed to locate your router’s admin page, and find the Port Forwarding page hit add new service or custom service. When you get a page asking to setup the new rule, it should prompt you on what you want to call it. You may name it as you wish, but for simplicity, name it “minecraft“. Then, you want to look for “type”. If “TCP/UDP” or “Both” isn’t an option you will have to create two rules for both protocols. For the ports , enter 25565. If it asks for anything else other than output IP , leave it alone and continue.

To find your computer’s IP address, use the following steps:

Now it is time to configure and connect.

Setting Up A Simple Modded Minecraft Server

Just like you can easily inject Forge mod loader into a standalone Minecraft installation you can easily inject Forge mod loader into the Minecraft server.

You can reuse the same installer you used for Forge in the previous modding tutorial simply rerun it and adjust the settings as such:

Select Install server and point it at a fresh directory. You dont need to install a server and then install Forge, like you need to install Minecraft and then install Forge like we did in the client-side tutorial.

Note: If you jumped down to this section because you were so excited about mods on your server, well still encourage you to read the previous section as several of the steps are identical, and were not repeating them all in detail for this portion of the tutorial.

Give it a minute to download both the server and Forge files, then visit the installation folder. The next steps will look a whole lot like the vanilla Minecraft server setup.

Within the folder, run the forge.*.universal.jar file using the exact same command you used, based on your operating system from the vanilla installation portion of this tutorial.

The server will run and then halt, indicating as it did in the previous section that you need to accept the EULA. Open up the freshly created EULA.txt and edit the false to true just like last time.

Everything looks good. We even spawned near a village, which is always fun. Lets show these villagers how to party by spawning a portal to a magical dimension.
