How To Create A Minecraft 117 Server
While playing Minecraft, players may find they wish to start playing with others within the same world. If money isn’t an issue, then this can be done relatively easily via the use of Minecraft realms, a paid service offered by Mojang themselves.
If players don’t want to pay or want a bit more control over things, they can opt to set up their own Minecraft server. This is relatively uncomplicated but does require a few slightly technical steps.
The guide below will simplify everything players need to know about setting up their very own 1.17 “Caves and Cliffs” Minecraft server.
Enhanced Privacy And Security
Many hosting providers empower you with a control panel using which you can control your server to restrict who is entering your server. Hence, you can enjoy better privacy and enjoy your game without hassle.
You also get full network protection to mitigate online attacks like DDoS. So, you can enjoy a secure network without risking your data.

Set Up Port Forwarding
Warning: This is probably the most challenging part of the tutorial and its also the section that can cause security risks. Ensure you have a parent with you when you complete this step and do not download anything extra.
Port forwarding is required if you want your friends to connect to your server when they are connected to a different internet connection that you are connected to. Unfortunately, this step will be different depending on which router you are using. I will list the steps that it takes to get my Xfinity router set-up for port forwarding, but you will have to research your own router and follow its steps.
The first step for me is navigating to the Port Forwarding section on Xfinitys website. I found this by googling How to Port Forward my Xfinity Router so I suggest a similar search for you, but with your specific routers name.
The next step for me had common configurations to use, including Minecraft, so I went ahead and chose that. If you dont have this option, the important thing to know is to use port number 25565 for Minecraft.
Any other port number will not work. Note that I blocked off my IP Address, this is the part that you want to keep secure from people you do not know or trust. Depending on your router, they may reserve a custom IP address for you . If thats the case, this is the IP Address you will provide to your friends. If they do not reserve one for you, you will have to use your own IP address.
Opening Your Server To Remote Players
If you want to play with people outside your local network you can set up port forwarding so players outside your home network can access the server. Most home broadband connections can easily support many players. Because the server doesnt have a password system, you may want to consider creating a whitelist on the server. Use the command and parameters /whitelist to adjust and view the whitelist.

Once launched, you should be greeted with an option to “install server”. Select this and then hit the “OK” button.
Code The Rest Of The Mod
Well speed up a little bit and show you what the final code looks like. Dont worry, the blocks are color coded it should be very easy for you to find the menus where theyre located.
The first line of blocks in the main function will simply send a message to the player. The second line will spawn a zombie in front of the player. And, the third line will give the player a diamond sword.

How To Setup A Modded Minecraft Server
Minecraft is a fun game to play with friends, and modding the game can add many more possibilities. Server hosting websites or Minecraft Realms cost a monthly subscription to use. If you don’t have the money to have a separate website host the server for you, setting up your own server for free will be your best option. Here’s how to setup a modded Minecraft server in 1.12.2 .
Download The Minecraft Server
The first step in downloading a Minecraft server is to download the Server.jar file from the Minecraft website.
Optional: If you want an older version, you can find a list of Minecraft versions below. Be sure to click the Server jar on the version you want to make sure you have the Server.jar required for the next step.
Once on the page, click the Download Minecraft server jar link as shown.
Note: You may have a different version number than shown in the picture. This is okay as the latest version of Minecraft is constantly being updated.
Your computer may notify you that the file could be harmful to your computer. This is because any .jar file is treated as harmful when downloading in most browsers and computers. Just click Keep as this is an official Minecraft server .jar file we can trust.
Before we run this .jar file we want to create a folder for it that will hold all of the files. A common practice is to create the server folder on your desktop. To do this, go to your desktop and right click on an open space. Go to New > Folder and click to create a new empty folder.
Once it is clicked it will let you change the name of the folder, so name it something so you know it is your Minecraft Server.
Now return to your Downloads folder the same way we did earlier and right click on the Server.jar to copy it as we will paste it into the new folder we made in the next step.

Try Our Free Minecraft Modding Class
Were currently offering a free trial for our Minecraft Modding class using LearnToMod. In this free intro class, well introduce students to the LearnToMod platform. Theyll also start building their very first mod! This class is intended for students in grades 4th – 6th.
In the intro class, students will use a simulator that is built into the website, and not actual Minecraft since well mainly focus on the website features. However, once students enroll in the Level 1 class, theyll get access to a Minecraft account for the duration of the class – if they dont have one or dont want to purchase one. As a reminder, students in Levels 1 – 3 will be using the Minecraft 1.9.2 Java version for PC or MacOS. Chromebooks, tablets, and smart phones will not work in this class.

Why Linux And Not A Fully Managed Solution
This is a valid question. A fully managed solution like one offered by the many dedicated Minecraft hosting companies out there can make sense. There is no need to secure the underlying Linux OS, this is all done for you.You get a nice graphical front end to manage your server, automated backups, DNS management to access your server, FTP access. They provide a GUI for managing your mods.
However, if you decide to go with a dedicated setup you can get a credit towards your server with DigitalOcean if you sign up through this referral link. Sizing of your server will depend on how many mods and users you intend to have.
Here are some of the reasons you may want to build your own
1 – Maximum control right down to the OS level.2 – Prefer working from the command line than from a Web browser to manage your server.3 – High memory and cpu needs for your server and a VPS or dedicated server is cheaper than a higher end fully hosted solution.4 – Have a server available which isn’t costing you anything and a good internet link.5 – Want to learn how to do it yourself from start to finish.6 – Finally, the most important reason of all…..Because You Can!
Get The Latest Version Of Java
The first step in setting up a Minecraft server is making sure you have the latest version of Java installed. Minecraft requires Java to run the game and having the latest version will help us run our server without issues.
You can install the latest version of Java here. Once there, click the red Java Download button as you can see below:
Then, read and accept the terms by clicking the red Agree and Start Free Download button.
The Java setup run file should now be in the download folder of your computer. If you need help with finding the download folder, type in downloads into your computer search bar and open the Downloads folder.
Once in the downloads folder find the JavaSetup executable file and run this application. A popup window may appear asking if the application can make changes to your computer. Click to allow access, you may be asked to provide a password for these permissions.
Once the application loads click to install Java.
You may be asked to uninstall a previous Java version, do so as keeping an older version does not help with our server setup.
Once any previous versions are removed continue through the window prompts until Java is downloaded and up to date.
The first step in setting up a Minecraft server should now be complete. The following step we must take is downloading and setting up the actual Minecraft server folder.

Things To Consider Before Hosting A Minecraft Server
Benefits of Using Hosting Your Own Minecraft Server
- You are able to have complete control over the entire server at all times. If you want something done, you can make it happen as quickly as you can do it yourself. There is no need to rely on someone else doing things for you.
- You have the ability to upgrade your computer however you desire to increase performance. Many server hosting companies offer higher premiums for higher specs, but if you happen to have the newest generation processor, the maximum amount of ram, and the biggest and most powerful graphics card, then your server can be one of the most powerful servers out there.
- It can be fun to setup and learn how to configure networking. Youll get to learn about various network features that you probably wouldnt need to know otherwise.
- It wont cost you anything other than what it takes to run your computer. Using a hosting company costs money, but by hosting your own server you will only pay what it costs to keep your computer running.
Hosting your own Minecraft server can be very rewarding, but it does have a few drawbacks you should understand before attempting it yourself.
To Install Individual Mods:
After you have completed steps 1-5 shown above and your server is running the appropriate version of Forge for the mods you wish to add, navigate to your File Manager within Prisma .
Open your mods folder.
Either drag and drop each individual mod file to the folder OR use the Upload feature towards the top-right of the panel. 4. Once you have uploaded each of the mods youd like to the server, you should be good to go!
