Where To Host Your Server
For your server to be accessible, it needs a place to live.
If youâve downloaded a server and launched it on your computer, your server will only be online for as long as your computer is running it. Turn the computer off , and bye-bye custom Minecraft world.
So you need a computer that will remain online and accessible for the players 24/7.
For this, you can use a generic hosting provider and rent a dedicated server to host your game world.
Once you have remote access to your rented server:
Start the server via the Java command java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraftserver.1.17.1.jar nogui
Set up your connection parameters, find the IP-address and ports to connect, etc.
While this is a very popular method for setting up your own Minecraft Multiplayer server, we agree that it involves a bit of work.
So letâs look at some other solutions.
How To Create A Realm
Java Edition: First, you’ll need to purchase a subscription for a Realm . You can activate a 30-day free trial to test the waters and cancel anytime.
Once you have a subscription plan, open Minecraft and click Minecraft Realms. If this is your first time creating a Realm, click on . Here you can name your Realm and enter a brief description before choosing your world type.
Choose between generating a new world, uploading a previous world save, or explore Realms’ World templates, Adventures, and Experiences.
Now that you’ve created your Realm, choose Configure Realm and click on Players. Now all you have to do to whitelist a friend on your server is click Invite player and type in their username before clicking Invite player again. Your friend will receive an invitation to join your Realm.

Minecraft: Java Edition Lan Play
Playing multiplayer on this version isnt quite so cut and dry. You can host a world on a local network using the integrated multiplayer component. For online multiplayer, however, youll need Mojangs standalone server software.
Heres how to enable multiplayer within Minecraft: Java Edition:
Step 1: Select Singleplayer.
Step 2: Create a new world or open an existing world.
Step 3: Press the Esc key.
Step 4: Select Open to LAN on the menu.
Step 5: Select the game mode, enable or disable cheats, and then select Start LAN World.
Other players on the network can now select Multiplayer and join your world. However, keep in mind that you need a decent PC to host a multiplayer Minecraft world. Not only is the game rendering the world on your screen, but its sending the world to all other players and synchronizing all player input. This can be taxing on PCs with low hardware specs.
Are Minecraft Realms Worth It
Overall, Minecraft Realms are a worthwhile and official answer to creating and managing a server for Minecraft if you want a simple gaming experience. Hosting your own server provides a user-friendly alternative to third-party server hosts. However, Minecraft Realms are not for everybody.

Inviting Other Players To Your ‘realms’ Server
Depending on whether you have a free trial or the higher-tier Realms subscription, you’ll be able to create a world accessible to two players, or up to 10 players. Here’s how to invite one or many friends to your realm:
1. Open Minecraft from the launcher and select “Minecraft Realms” in the main menu.
2. Click the wrench icon, located to the right of your realm name, for the realm configuration screen.
3. Select “Players,” on the top-left side of the “Configure a realm” screen.
4. Enter the Microsoft or Mojang gamertag for the player you want to invite under “Name,” then tap “Invite player.”
All you have to do now is wait for the player to accept the invite, which they’ll be notified about in the main menu next time they launch “Java.”
You can also grant invited players “Operator” status, allowing them access to certain in-game commands. Operators cannot, however, invite or remove players from the realm.
Connect To The Server And Create A World
Playing Minecraft on the same machine running your server isnt a good idea given the resources needed to run both. Doing so will likely create a laggy experience for everyone. We suggest running Minecraft on another PC if possible.
Step 1: Select Multiplayer.
Step 2: Check the box next to Do Not Show This Screen Again, and then select Proceed if this is the first time youre nagged about multiplayer.
Step 3: Select Add Server.
Step 4: Enter the server name.
Step 5: To allow remote players, enter the public-facing address assigned to your modem, along with the port. For example, the IP address would be something like 126.96.36.199:25565.
For local network play, enter the server PCs network address. You likely dont need to add the port.
Step 6: Select Done to complete.

Minecraft: How To Play Multiplayer
Minecraft is one of the most creatively fulfilling games you can play today, and even with its delightfully rudimentary graphics, the game can feel every bit as advanced as you desire. It essentially hands all the tools you need right from the word go and lets you explore the world at your pace.
There is little to no hand-holding in Minecraft, which works wonderfully in the game’s favor as you are then rewarded for experimenting and discovering things on your own.
Perhaps, the most popular way of playing any modern game is to play it with other people and friends. This is why Minecraft also allows you to play multiplayer in various ways, including split-screen on console.

Download The Minecraft Server
The first step in downloading a Minecraft server is to download the Server.jar file from the Minecraft website.
Optional: If you want an older version, you can find a list of Minecraft versions below. Be sure to click the Server jar on the version you want to make sure you have the Server.jar required for the next step.
Once on the page, click the Download Minecraft server jar link as shown.
Note: You may have a different version number than shown in the picture. This is okay as the latest version of Minecraft is constantly being updated.
Your computer may notify you that the file could be harmful to your computer. This is because any .jar file is treated as harmful when downloading in most browsers and computers. Just click Keep as this is an official Minecraft server .jar file we can trust.
Before we run this .jar file we want to create a folder for it that will hold all of the files. A common practice is to create the server folder on your desktop. To do this, go to your desktop and right click on an open space. Go to New > Folder and click to create a new empty folder.
Once it is clicked it will let you change the name of the folder, so name it something so you know it is your Minecraft Server.
Now return to your Downloads folder the same way we did earlier and right click on the Server.jar to copy it as we will paste it into the new folder we made in the next step.

How To Play Multiplayer On Minecraft Online
PC or console users who want to play online can use an extensive library of servers, or set up their own private server for a smaller group of friends. There are benefits and drawbacks to both. Servers require a powerful infrastructure and internet connection to run, and the PC thats hosting as a server may not be able to play on it as well. On the other hand, joining public servers requires you to abide by their rules, moderation, and regulation.
Setting up a server takes time and technical knowledge, but can be simplified with online hosting services. If you want to learn how to build your Minecraft server from scratch, the documentation required to do so is available here. Warning: The instructions are publicly edited and updated to the most recent version of Minecraft. They may not run properly on your computer configuration.
If you dont have the technical know-how or the time to set the server up, online server hosting platforms can make that process a lot simpler. Heres an example with Apex Minecraft Hosting:
