Just like you can easily inject Forge mod loader into a standalone Minecraft installation you can easily inject Forge mod loader into the Minecraft server.

You can reuse the same installer you used for Forge in the previous modding tutorial simply rerun it and adjust the settings as such:

Select Install server and point it at a fresh directory. You dont need to install a server and then install Forge, like you need to install Minecraft and then install Forge like we did in the client-side tutorial.

Note: If you jumped down to this section because you were so excited about mods on your server, well still encourage you to read the previous section as several of the steps are identical, and were not repeating them all in detail for this portion of the tutorial.

Give it a minute to download both the server and Forge files, then visit the installation folder. The next steps will look a whole lot like the vanilla Minecraft server setup.

Within the folder, run the forge.*.universal.jar file using the exact same command you used, based on your operating system from the vanilla installation portion of this tutorial.

The server will run and then halt, indicating as it did in the previous section that you need to accept the EULA. Open up the freshly created EULA.txt and edit the false to true just like last time.

Everything looks good. We even spawned near a village, which is always fun. Lets show these villagers how to party by spawning a portal to a magical dimension.

Is Hosting A Minecraft Server Free

Some Minecraft servers hosting services are free, while some services come with premium and paid plans. For free Minecraft server hosting, you may need to compromise with some features, while Minecraft server hostings with premium plans allow you to save all the server data like installed game servers with their IP addresses, maps, uploaded mods, plugins, etc.

What To Look For In Minecraft Server Hosting

Like many other applications, Minecraft puts demands on both hardware and infrastructure. In order to enjoy a smooth gaming experience on self-hosted Minecraft environments, you need to be aware of some financial and technical details.

Although most of these details apply broadly to almost all web hosting options, some web hosts have gone a step further to offer specialized Minecraft hosting plans which may include extra Minecraft-specific features.

Running your own Minecraft server online means that youll need the hardware and bandwidth to support it. Unless you own a data center, that means renting space on a server hosted by a web hosting company like Hostinger.

To ensure that your Minecraft hosting runs smoothly, there are some things you need to consider when choosing a Minecraft hosting plan, such as

Minimum Minecraft Server Hosting Requirements

As you might be already aware, hosting games is often challenging since they are typically more resource-hungry than typical web applications. Thankfully, Minecraft isnt exactly a huge resource hog so you can easily host the game on web servers that meet some pretty basic specifications.

That being said, were talking here about the basic setups of Minecraft pure Vanilla as its called. For such installations and an average player group of up 10 users, you can get by with the bare minimum in the VPS hosting space.

Lets look at the exact requirements for plain Vanilla Minecraft hosting in numbers:

Minimum Requirements:

  • 2GB RAM
  • 2 CPU Core

Storage space requirements are pretty negligible in context to whats usually offered by hosting providers, so weve skipped it altogether. Just make that storage is SSD-based.

However, if youre more serious about Minecraft then youll be likely looking at hosting setups that will allow you to enjoy the game in player groups of 50 and above. You might also like to consider other possibilities such as the use of custom mods, which will increase the requirements even further.

In such cases, wed recommend a VPS hosting plan like the Minecraft Villager Plan offered by Hostinger, which includes 3GB of RAM but clocking in at $12.95/mo. As you can see, the more players you want to host, the higher your potential monthly cost gets.

  • 2Double-click the Minecraft server file. This will cause it to begin unpacking inside of your new folder.
  • 3Agree to the Minecraft server terms of use. Once the “eula” file appears, double-click it to open it in TextEdit, then delete false from the “eula=false” line and type in true to save the changes and exit TextEdit.
  • The edited “eula” file should now read “eula=true” instead of “eula=false”
  • 4Double-click the Minecraft server file again. It will resume unpacking files inside of the folder.
  • 5Close the “Minecraft server” window when it finishes loading. Once you see “Done” in the line of text at the bottom of the window, you can click the red circle in the top-left corner of the window to close it. At this point, you’re free to configure Hamachi.Advertisement

    Why Run A Minecraft Server

One of the most frustrating elements of the Minecraft local multiplayer experience is that the original game host has to be active to access previous creations. If there are two parents and two kids playing Minecraft in a household for example, and they spend a few hours one weekend working on a big structure hosted by Kid #2, then anytime anyone wants to work on that world/structure again they need Kid #2 to fire up their game and share it with everyone else by opening it to the LAN. Factor in that each world resides on each separate computer and suddenly it becomes a real hassle for more than one person to work on a given map.

A much more efficient way to go about doing things is to host a stand-alone server on the local network. This way players can come and go as they please without any one person needing to log in and share their world. Even better, you can host a Minecraft server on a machine that isnt well suited for actually playing Minecraft .

Lets take a look at how to setup a basic local Minecraft server both with and without mods.

Adding Additional Mods To Your Minecraft Modded Server

When playing a modded Minecraft server you may want to add mods to it to alter the experience or include something that you feel the pack is missing. Below you will find all the steps required to add the additional mods to your server as well as methods for using FTP access to update and restart everything.

    Root Access To Your Server

    Minecraft Server Modded

The instructions assume that you have root access to your server. For simplicity I assume you are logging in as the root user. All of these commands will also work with sudo. If running sudo from your user account then make sure to add it when necessary. I will not be using sudo in front of these command line arguments throughout the document.

        apt update & & apt -y upgrade
        apt install screen
cd /opt mkdir minecraft cd minecraft

Now download the version 1.12.2 Forge Installer. Pick the Latest Installer file and copy it to your /opt/minecraft folder.

You should now have only one jar file in your /opt/minecraft folder.

Tip: If connecting to your server from a Windows based pc, use Filezilla or WinSCP to transfer the files to your Linux server

        java -jar forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2854-installer.jar --installServer

    forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2854.jar

Now run the newly created forge jar file as follows

        assuming a server with 2048MB cd /opt/minecraft & & java -Xms1024M -Xmx2000M -jar /opt/minecraft/forge-1.12.2-14.23.5.2854.jar nogui

For example, on a VPS with 1GB of ram I have set xms and xmx to 512M and 1008M respectively. So start the JVM with 512MB of ram and let it grow to just under 1GB max.

    b) accept the EULA. The first time you try to run your minecraft server you will be required to accept the EULA.

        nano eula.txt
        nano /etc/rc.local
        screen -dm -S minecraft /opt/scripts/minecraft.sh
    cd /etcnano rc.local
    #!/bin/shscreen -dm -S minecraft /opt/scripts/minecraft.shexit 0

You will need to download the appropriate server software for whichever version of Minecraft you are running. To determine which version of Minecraft you are running, launch Minecraft and check the title screen. If it says “Java Edition” below “Minecraft” on the title screen, you are running Minecraft: Java Edition. If the title screen just says “Minecraft” with no text below it, you are running the Bedrock Edition.
  • The server software for Minecraft: Bedrock Edition is still in it’s Alpha testing phase. It may be more buggy than Minecraft: Java Edition.
  • Only players on PC and Mac can connect to Minecraft: Java Edition servers. Players on Windows 10, Android, iPhone, iPad, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PS4 can connect to a Minecraft Bedrock server.

    Setting Up Server Properties

Now lets look at some server properties we can change to customize what kind of Minecraft game you want to play in your server. Open the server properties file.

Once here, you will see a lot of text sections. Lets cover the most important ones and look at the properties you will most likely want to change.

The properties highlighted in the above image are some of the most important ones you should be familiar with. The first gamemode=survival property determines the gamemode you and your players will play in the server by default. This is set to survival meaning you will have hunger and health you will have to manage in game. Setting this to gamemode=creative lets the players build, break, and fly as they are untouchable and unkillable in this gamemode.

The next spawn-monsters=true is a property that tells the server monsters and dangerous enemies will appear. Changing this to spawn-monsters=false will stop monsters from spawning even in survival mode.

One of the more important properties in our experience with minecraft servers is the next highlighted pvp=true line. PvP stands for player vs play so this controls whether or not players can damage each other. By default this is set to true meaning players can hurt and damage one another in game. Setting this to pvp=false will disable and ability for players to damage each other.

A Minecraft server is no fun without people to share it with, but where do you even begin? Today we will be exploring a few tried and true methods that you can use to get players on your Minecraft server.

    A Website

Number one on our list will not bring in any players directly, but having a website is a great way to show legitimacy and dedication. No one wants to put their time, let alone money, into a server that will be gone by the end of the month. Seeing a well-made website can ease those fears.

Your website can also be linked to in the options yet to come. Forums, server lists, and social media, all being examples. If they are visiting your website, chances are they are nearly on the hook!

Websites are made using web hosting. This can be purchased here at BisectHosting or many other places online.

    Forums and Reddit

Many successful Minecraft servers today can be traced back to a post of the MC Forums. Just like their early beginnings, making a forum post describing what your server offers can be a great way to gain a few initial players.

There are many more options outside of the MC Forums nowadays too. We personally recommend making a post on Reddits MCservers subreddit. Remember, it does not hurt to post in more then one place!

    Social Media

Another great way to get your server out there is a social media presence. , , and even can all be used to your advantage.
