Fine Tuning With Serverproperties
Inside the server folder youll find a file named server.properties. If you open this file in a text editor youll find a simple configuration file that can be manually edited. While some of these settings are available via server/in-game commands, many of them are not.
Using simple true/false or numerical toggles its possible to allow players to fly during survival mode, turn off The Nether, adjust server timeout settings, and a host of other variables. While many of the settings are fairly self-explanatory, a few require a more in-depth understanding of the variable involved. Check out this detailed breakdown of the server.properties variables.
Armed with a server, modded or otherwise, you now no longer have to worry about making sure the right person is online at the right time in order to access your world .

Modded Minecraft Server Requirements

Running a modded Minecraft server is only slightly more complex than running a vanilla Minecraft server. The standard requirements for hosting the server on a PC still apply:
- Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU.
- At least 4GB of RAM.
- At least 150MB of HDD storage for server files, plus additional space for storing mods.
- 10 Mbps wired/ethernet internet connection.
- Access to your routers web interface for port-forwarding.
- Latest version of Java Runtime Environment .
To install mods on your server, you also need:
- Minecraft Forge modding API.
- Mod files.
Note that each mod is only compatible with a specific Minecraft Forge version, so make sure to download and install the right version. For example, the popular Midnight mod can only run on Minecraft Forge version 1.15.2.

Requirements To Host A Minecraft Server
If you are already running Minecraft 1.18 on your PC, the requirements might not seem too demanding. Based on the latest edition of the game, we recommend the following specifications for hosting a server with 4-6 players:
- Windows 10 or 11
- 2 GBs of RAM or more
- A reliable internet connection with 5 MB/sec or faster internet speed
- Enough power supply to keep the PC running as long as the server is online
Please note that usually Minecraft only transfers around 100-150 MB of data on a non-modded server per hour. Therefore, you can host it on PCs with lower specs and slower internet speeds. But thats only the case for vanilla Minecraft worlds with low server activity. You can dive deeper into the specs by exploring the Minecraft Wiki. Alternatively, you can also ask your friends to host a server if they have better specs. But if you want to do it all by yourself, read on to learn how to make a Minecraft server.

Start The Minecraft Server
To start the Minecraft server, open the Windows command prompt.
Navigate to the file path where the Minecraft server file was installed.
Start the server with the following command:
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar nogui
If youd rather use the servers UI, exclude the nogui parameter:
java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar
You can also create a .bat file to batch the commands together.
Once the server is running, you can invite others to connect to your server via your local IP address if theyre on your home network, or via your external/public IP address if theyre not on your home network.

Alternatives To A Minecraft Server On Your Pc
In addition to being able to play on a server created by another player, you can create your own Minecraft server. To do this you have two main options:
- create a Minecraft server using your home computer
- rely on a hosting company.
As we saw in the previous section, in order to create a Minecraft server from home you need to have a fairly high-performance computer. Depending on the number of players, then, you have to fit in the hardware requirements for your server to run properly.
Another disadvantage of creating a Minecraft server on your computer is that the operation of the server will be tied to it. So when you turn off your computer, the server will also stop working.
Also consider that you generally wont be able to use the PC that youll be using as a host to run other programs.
Ideally using your own computer would allow you to create a Minecraft server for free. In reality, however, you always have to consider the costs in terms of consumption.
If your goal is to create a Minecraft server that is always active and performing well, the best solution is to rely on a VPS cloud hosting service or a dedicated server. You can check our articles to find out how much does a dedicated server cost and what is the cloud plan cost.
In this table you can see our recommended plans based on the number of players.

Enable Port Forwarding On Your Router
Note: Port forwarding can be a security risk.
If youre just hosting a server for players on your local network, you dont need to worry about port forwarding. If, however, you want to make your server accessible to the world, youll need to enable port forwarding on your router.
Refer to your routers documentation to find specific instructions on how to configure port forwarding for your device. For Minecraft, youll need to forward TCP port 25565.
Youll also need to enter your servers local IP address as the Output IP or Server IP for the forwarded port. This tells the router which device to point at. To find your servers local IP, open a command prompt and enter ipconfig.

Minecraft is a popular sandbox game for many reasons. Its very easy to pick up and learn, gives you the flexibility to do whatever you want in the game, is essentially endless, and lets you build anything you want, provided you have the creativity.
However, the biggest reason Minecraft is so mainstream is because of the ability to play with other people. This is not to be confused with online games like Call of Duty where you and your friends play pre-loaded levels together. Online Minecraft allows you and your friends to create an entire world from the ground up with nothing holding you back. In order to play online with your friends, however, you need to set up a server that you can both connect to.
Please note: We recommend getting a parents permission before setting up a private server. Parts of this tutorial can cause security risks, you should you have a parent with you and do not download anything extra.
