Is Minecraft A Good Coding Introduction For Kids

How To Code Minecraft!

The real key to teaching a child coding is finding the right motivation. Minecraft offers that as it combines a fun game they love, with a gentle introduction to coding functionality.

The way Minecraft engrosses kids can be used to help engage them to learn about something useful in a fun way that doesnt feel like work.

Minecraft can be enhanced by modifications that are outside strings of code that changes the game from the inside, such as generating monsters, giving players increased health or items and even telling the non-playable characters to do specific things.

These mods are usually downloaded through a third-party website, with players sharing their own mods among the online community for everyone to use, but you can easily create your own mods to enhance your own gaming experience exactly how you want it.

Because of the relative simplicity of Minecraft as a game, learning how to modify it is a good steppingstone to learning to manipulate and create code for other games and programs.

Prepare Your Battle Plan And Mindset

No, the first step is, contrary to what most articles do, NOT downloading software and clicking a freaking button to create a new project right away. You can do this and give up, like most people after 1-4 weeks. Before you even touch something, you need to set your foundations right.

Start by planning out the next 30 days what days will you be able to dedicate to this, and how many hours? Any important exams, doctor appointments, job or client work, or holidays? Once you get that handled, set a specific goal for the month. It can be I will easily code a double-jump plugin in the next 30 days. It should be attainable and realistic to your level of experience.

Studies show that most people over-exaggerate their expectations so you should probably divide yours by 1/3 or more. Once you start seeing progress from something realistic it will give you a winners effect and a feeling of empowerment that will keep you motivated. If you set the bar too high you will crash and lose motivation once you get stuck, and then find yourself browsing Facebook or Youtube videos and soon give up on your plan. So really, keep this in mind !

Now the download of the executable file will start.

Once this is finished, find the file in your downloads folder and run the executable to install the JDK.

Run through the pop up window guide to install the JDK for your computer and click on each next keeping the default settings until the JDK finishes installing.

You will need to agree to the End-User License Agreement to continue.

Let Java run its installation until it is finished.

Now that JDK is finished, we can set up our code editor in the next step.

Java and Python are both great languages to learn, but they are far from the only ones out there. If youre interested in learning JavaScript instead, Minecraft Hour of Code through might be exactly what youre looking for.

Hour of Code doesnt actually use the Minecraft game to teach coding. Instead, it is coding Minecraft characters using the Blockly editor created by Google and MIT. Blockly is a drag-and-drop JavaScript editor that allows a student to use pre-made blocks of code to solve different challenges. Each block uses real JavaScript code that the student can view to get a better picture of what is happening behind the scenes.

We Bring Minecraft Where It Used To Be

Most server owners get stuck in a cycle of constant updates, broken plugins, frustrated with errors, micromanaging players and wasting time.

They know very little about coding or rely on friends or developers to make plugins for them. New Minecraft updates break stuff, developers become inactive and its too hard and frustrating to do everything yourself and keep up.

Existing plugins dont do what you want them to do. They are hard to configure and cannot be translated into your own unique style and needs.

Most people have amazing ideas but they never transform them into reality because they dont have enough time, no idea how, get overwhelmed or simply run out of money.

The servers end pretty empty and if new people show up, they dont stay because its empty. Server owners lose motivation for the game. Some wanted to continue but bigger networks came in, wiped their player-base away and left them helpless.

At the end, many server owners have to close their server.

How To Use Minecraft Commands

To get started with these Minecraft commands, simply hit the forward slash key to open the chat window then continue typing the command. You can use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through previously entered commands, and pressing the Tab key while entering commands will cycle through possible options. For most of these Minecraft cheats to work, you need to be in a game where cheats were enabled when the world was created. In a single player world where they weren’t, you can enable cheats by opening the game to LAN and selecting “Allow Cheats” , and this choice will be remembered until you quit your world.

Instead of typing in individual player name for the player prompt, you can use the following shortcuts to select specific targets for your command: = the nearest player to you = a random player = all players in the world = all entities in the world = you

How To Learn Coding In Minecraft Education Edition

The first, and easiest, way to try out coding is to complete the first lesson in Minecraft Education Edition. The game is free for teachers and students with an Office 365 account, but for those without it, a coding lesson is available.

Players who aren’t eligible for the free download can still complete the first lesson at no charge. It will focus entirely on coding.

Another great way to learn about coding in Minecraft Education Edition is through the code builder update. The update is available to all users. Here’s how Minecraft describes it:

“You will have the choice of learn-to-code platforms when you open Code Builder. We are excited to continue our partnerships with Microsoft MakeCode and Tynker as we continue to evolve game-based coding with Minecraft… The Agent now displays its coordinates as you code. Find your Agent easily using the Agent Spawn Egg to make your lessons even more efficient. You can also target your Agent via commands and remove agents from the world .”

Aside from that, Minecraft Education Edition NPCs are another option to learn about coding. Players can use spawn eggs to bring NPCs into the game and can learn how to code them using the available options.

Can Minecraft Teach My Kid To Code

Minecraft has proven to be a flexible platform for education. It has been used as a tool for teaching a myriad of concepts, so it makes sense to assume it would be useful for teaching coding to kids. And it is!

Minecraft does a great job of providing an environment to learn coding in by giving students both a place to virtually meet with their educators and by visually showing them the effects that coding can have. But it isnt as simple as launching the game and letting the kids learn. Instead, it works best as one of many tools used in a more complete coding curriculum.

As part of our interactive coding curriculum we teach our students how to create their very own games based off of Minecraft. Theyre able to learn programming in an exciting hands-on environment that does more than teach them the basic principles. It teaches them how to apply them. And unlike so many video based programs, our coding classes, for elementary, middle, and high school, are taught by live teachers so our students can get feedback on their projects in real time.

The main thing is this: Minecraft on its own will not be able to teach a kid how to code. Rather, it is a great way to build their interest in coding and can be useful as an educational tool in a well-crafted curriculum.

What Is Minecraft Education Edition

Minecraft Education Edition is somewhat different to the basic game of Minecraft, developed especially to be used in an educational environment such as a school.

Being constantly updated, this version of the game involves tutorials and basic instructions that allows for both children and adult beginners to coding to modify their own games in Minecraft.

Featuring a Code Builder, you can have Minecraft open in one app and code for it in the other, allowing you to see the changes to the game in real-time.

What Else Is Part Of The Code Builder Update

Minecraft: Hour Of Code
  • The Library Beta: Were shipping a beta version of the Library, a new feature that allows players to view and download worlds in-game without having to leave Minecraft and go to our website. You will see a new Library button on your home screen and a list of dynamically generated templates in your list of available templates when creating a new world. We also added the ability to deep link to content in the Library from outside the game, for example, here is a deep link to the Chemistry Tutorial world.
  • On-screen Control Guide: We know that, for some educators, using Minecraft: Education Edition is a new experience, and it can be challenging to get use to the game controls. Educators will now have a control guide directly on screen to get you up and running in a Minecraft world. These controls will update depending on how you use the game, and you can turn them off in the settings menu once youre comfortable using the controls.
  • Educator Resources: We also added an Educator Resources button on the home screen that connects users with professional development, training, lessons and community content on our website. In addition, if you are a new user or introducing Minecraft: Education Edition to your students, now you can find Education content in the games How to Play menu.
