Can You Make A Minecraft Server For Free

Yes, you can make a Minecraft server for free, however, there are limitations. If you sign up for free Minecraft hosting, it will most likely come with a limited amount of resources, including storage, bandwidth, and hardware. A free Minecraft plan also limits you from adding mod-packs and plugins, which can prevent users from getting the best experience.Another choice is to self-host your server, which can come at a cost. You will need to use a high-performing PC that has to be powered at all times and a fast internet connection to prevent latency. It will also require technical knowledge to maintain and secure your server. Thus, the best option is to choose an affordable and reliable Minecraft server hosting plan.

Start A Free Minecraft Server With Aternos

How to Create your Own Minecraft Server for Free (Play with Friends!)

Aternos is another free platform that offers private Minecraft servers to players. Just like Minehut, setting up a server with Aternos is a breeze. All you have to do is create a free account, add a server, and configure it up to your liking.

To get started, first visit aternos.org. Then click on the Play button located in the bottom-right corner.

Here, you can sign up for a free account or log in to an existing one. You can also sign in using your Google account if you want. Note that specifying an email address is optional, and you can create your account using just a username and password.

Once you have logged in to your account, click on the Create a server button.

Next, specify the server name and the description. You can also choose between Java Edition and Bedrock/Pocket Edition here. Note that, unlike Minehut, Aternos doesn’t support cross-platform play and you’ll have to create separate servers for both editions. Click on the Create button to continue.

On the server dashboard, you’ll have the option to start your server. To manage your server, select an option from the left sidebar. You can switch between Bedrock and Java editions by switching to the Software tab.

Likewise, the Console and File options allow players to access the console and file manager respectively. You can generate new worlds or backup your existing world using the Worlds and Backups option.

    Download The Minecraft Server

The first step in downloading a Minecraft server is to download the Server.jar file from the Minecraft website.

Optional: If you want an older version, you can find a list of Minecraft versions below. Be sure to click the Server jar on the version you want to make sure you have the Server.jar required for the next step.

Once on the page, click the Download Minecraft server jar link as shown.

Note: You may have a different version number than shown in the picture. This is okay as the latest version of Minecraft is constantly being updated.

Your computer may notify you that the file could be harmful to your computer. This is because any .jar file is treated as harmful when downloading in most browsers and computers. Just click Keep as this is an official Minecraft server .jar file we can trust.

Before we run this .jar file we want to create a folder for it that will hold all of the files. A common practice is to create the server folder on your desktop. To do this, go to your desktop and right click on an open space. Go to New > Folder and click to create a new empty folder.

Once it is clicked it will let you change the name of the folder, so name it something so you know it is your Minecraft Server.

Now return to your Downloads folder the same way we did earlier and right click on the Server.jar to copy it as we will paste it into the new folder we made in the next step.

How To Make Your Own Minecraft Server!

First you’ll need to create a folder called “Minecraft_Server” or something that can tell you this will be your Minecraft server folder. Now from here you can either download the .exe file or the .jar file. .exe is easier and I don’t really know the difference between them, but if for some reason your just a .jar guy, then Im sorry but you can find another tutorial for the jar file. First, go to and under Multiplayer Server, click on minecraft_server1.7.10.exe. That will start the download. Place the file in your Minecraft_Server folder. Run the file and it should load up all the worlds and stuff. After it says “Done!”, you can close it. Next, you’ll have to set yourself as an operator . To do this, look at the other files in your Minecraft_Server folder and find “ops.txt.” Type in your Minecraft username and you will become an op. If you want to more people, press enter, and then add their username.

Choose An Appropriate Location For Minecraft Server Files

    • Before downloading, set the system location from which the server should run
    • The server would produce prerequisite configuration files during the first instance. They all are vitally important and should be collectively stored in a separate folder to ensure quick access.
    • For the sake of access, you might assign a shortcut key to the folder and save it on your desktop. It is not mandatory though. You can save it at any location of your choice.

    • Go to the Minecraft website and download the Java.jar file which is the server software. It should be stored in the same location where you saved the installation files.
    • Start the server by double-clicking the .jar file which will generate configuration files. Make necessary modifications before the server gets ready for use
    • Open eula.txt file and replace eula=false with eula=true which is mandatory to start the Minecraft server.
    • You might encounter an error alerting that the server properties cant be saved. In that instance, right-click .jar file Run as an administrator that will enable you to run the Minecraft server as an administrator.

    Enable port forwarding

Go to the file named Server Properties. Make the required changes in key server settings and then save it. Its default server port is Port 25565

    Start the Minecraft server

Open windows command prompt to start the Minecraft server.

    • Go to the folder that is containing the Minecraft server file and give the following command

    Java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar nogui

    The Hard Way Using Portforwarding

Ah, ladies and gentlemen, friends and more friends, this is one of those rare moments when a man like myself is unable to help everyone. Port forwarding is a bit of a complex process in which you must manipulate and access your router in order to make it open, allowing people from around the world to join using your external IP. Now, I will guide you through the process as much as I can, but ultimately I wont be able to be of much help because each computer and router is different and has a unique technique to acheiving the end result. Well anyway, lets go!

    • Check your IP Make sure its Static
    • The first step will be to guarentee that your IP address is not Dynamic. Dynamic IPs constantly change every day or so, and that would mean your friends would have to enter a new IP each time they wished to join your server, and as you can imagine, thatd get very annoying
    • So, what we want is a Static IP one permanent IP that stays that way and wont change unless you make it. However, the method for this depends severely on your operating system and version. So, Id suggest you search for a YouTube video with the terms make static ip and see what results come up
  • Open the ports of your router
  • Heres the tough part, folks. I cant help you much here, as there are thousands and thousands of routers and instructions very for each one. The general idea is you want to open a port so that people can use it to join your server
  • Set up the server
  • Finally, sharing the server

Writing A Script To Launch The Server

It’s definitely boring to have to remember the command-line options for your server every time you launch it. Luckily, we can write it down in a file and just run that instead.

    On Windows

The windows version of a script is called a batch file. Create a text file in the folder where you put the jar as “start.bat”, and then right click it to edit using notepad. Paste the following in:

Double click the file to start your server. You may get a “Class_Not_Found” and ServerGuiConcole error, just ignore these errorsand you should see your “Server Thread/INFO” dialog start the server.

The “pause” command is there to keep the window open so you can read what happened after the server stops.

    On macOS, Linux, and FreeBSD

All these systems use a common scripting language called the “POSIX shell script” on the command line. Create a text file in the folder where you put the jar as “start.sh” and write the following in:

    #!/bin/shcd"$"exec java -Xms1G -Xmx1G -jar server.jar --nogui

Now save the file. Run chmod a+x start.sh to make it executable. You can now run the file by double-clicking or by running ./start.sh in the folder .

If you want to add a pausing part like the Windows example, remove the exec word, and add a line of read -n 1 -p “Waiting…” to the end. This is useful if you are running the script by double-clicking on the GUI.
