Storage Media And Cpu Tests
Our first test is UL’s PCMark 10, a holistic performance suite that simulates different real-world productivity and content-creation workflows. We use it to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheet work, web browsing, and videoconferencing. PCMark 8, meanwhile, has a storage subtest that we use to assess the speed of the system’s boot drive. Both tests generate a proprietary numeric score higher numbers are better.
The Legion Tower 5i nosed ahead of the others with an exemplary 7,043-point showing in PCMark 10. Meanwhile, the PCMark 8 storage scores were a tight grouping since these desktops all employ fast solid-state boot storage.
Next up is a pair of CPU-crunching tests: Cinebench R15 stresses all available processor cores and threads while rendering a complex image, while in our Handbrake test, we transcode a 12-minute 4K video down to 1080p.
The Legion Tower 5is excellent scoring continued in these tests. It had no trouble keeping pace with the 95-watt Core i9-9900K in the HP despite its Core i7-10700 being only a 65-watt part. That said, it couldn’t quite match the efficiency of the 65-watt Ryzen 7 3700X in the Corsair, making me wish Lenovo offered a Ryzen version of the Legion Tower 5i.

Ii Graphics Card Requirements For Minecraft
The minimum requirements stipulate that Minecraft be played on the basic Intel HD graphics found on relatively older CPUs. Again indicating that the overall requirements are weak.
However, in this build we are more interested in creating a gaming computer that can easily meet the recommended system requirements.
The recommended graphics cards for Minecraft are the GeForce 700 Series / AMD Radeon RX 200.
This is pretty vague because the requirements just point to the series not the actual model.
So for instance, the RX 200 series has several cards such as the entry level R5 235, mid range, R7 260, and high end R9 270.
Similarly, the Nvidia 700 series has several video card models as well such the entry level GT 720, Mid Range GTX 760, and High End GTX 780.
For the purpose of comparison, we will choose an entry level, mid range and high-end GPU from the NVIDIA GeForce 700 and AMD Radeon RX 200 series for reference point benchmarking.

If We’re Making Some Suggestions
Any of the above laptops in our collection will run Minecraft without issue, though if you’re still wondering where to turn, we can offer further guidance. If you want a reliable laptop that’s equally capable of handling productivity work as it runs Minecraft, Acer’s Swift 3 is an excellent choice.
It has a 14-inch FHD display with an IPS panel, and it’s all built into a slim chassis. The keyboard is backlit, and it has a Precision touchpad. A built-in fingerprint reader resides in the palm rest. Performance hardware is enough to keep up with Minecraft and standard productivity work thanks to an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U CPU, 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and a 512GB NVMe SSD. AMD has improved its integrated graphics with its 4000-series mobile chips, so you should have no issues running Minecraft at a smooth framerate.
The Acer Swift 3 will handle a standard game of Minecraft. Still, if you’re looking to play Java Edition with some of the best Minecraft shaders or want to get in on RTX upgrades to the Bedrock Edition, a more powerful gaming PC is recommended. Enter the Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, a laptop capable of handling whatever games you throw its way.
It will handle all versions of Minecraft, and it will also be up to the task of running modern AAA games. Be sure to have a look at our roundup of the overall best gaming laptops for far more options.
Whats The Best Type Of Machine For Playing Minecraft
Jack Schofield looks at the options including tablets, laptops, desktops and games consoles
My son wants a computer to play the full version of Minecraft for his birthday. What are the options? Is there a tablet that can cope with the full version , or can you recommend a laptop? I am hoping to find something on a tight budget. Virginia
I answered a similar question last year , but it has since been raised again so theres clearly an unmet need for advice. Im going to try to provide a broader answer.
One of the problems evident from the Minecraft Wiki is that benchmarks are all over the place. Apparently similar systems can run at 3fps or 300fps. Real-world performance can vary dramatically depending on the settings chosen for graphics, lighting, textures, render distance, the number of mods and plug-ins installed, and the screen size. Adults, let alone children, may not be aware that free enhancements have a performance cost.
Then theres the subjective aspect. One person sets a render distance of five chunks and thinks Minecraft is just fine at 30fps while another sets a render distance of 12 chunks and thinks 150fps isnt good enough.
My general advice is to buy something with a graphics card rather than integrated graphics . The graphics card seems to be the single most important factor in Minecraft performance. Also, aim for a PC with a 64-bit operating system and 4GB or more memory, and make sure you install the 64-bit version of Oracles Java.

Desktops And Games Consoles
You would get more power for your money by buying a desktop PC such as a Chillblast Fusion Scythe or Fusion Strikeforce 2 . Laptop manufacturers fit low-voltage processors that generate less heat, but an airier desktop PC could use a hotter and much cheaper processor such as the 3.1GHz Pentium G3240, which has a TDP of 53W.
Desktop PCs have two other big advantages for Minecraft. First, they have internal slots for cheap graphics cards, and if a card isnt fast enough, its easy to upgrade it. Second, theyre much less likely to be damaged.
Finally, if you want the maximum graphics processing power for the lowest cost, consider a Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony PS3 games console, from £140. The console version of Minecraft does not have all the features of the PC version, but its in a different league to the Pocket Edition.
